>> your realtime captioner: linda marie macdonald the bay area braces for a 1- 2-3 punch from mother nature. the timetable for when the rain will hit hardest. good morning, it's wednesday, november 28. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everybody. i'm frank mallicoat. 5:00 on the nose now. and we begin right now, we have meteorologist lawrence karnow all fired up. he is setting by the hi-def doppler. cate caugiran at the richmond/san rafael bridge. but lawrence karnow, i have seen the hi-def doppler and it looks green. >> that hi-def doppler doesn't lie, frank.

it is showing some very heavy rainfall now just off the coastline. look at the yellows and the oranges there. this is just about to move onshore in time for the commute this morning. it is going to be a wild commute outside. some of the rain in the heavier bands coming into the north bay now. expecting that rain to intensify throughout the morning hours and along with this cold front that's moving through, some very strong gusty winds. purple along the coastline here is where we have a wind warning up along the coast as we are going to see some very strong gusty winds continuing all the way up into parts of the north bay, as well. could see 55, maybe 65-mile-an- hour gusts along with this system and showers continuing into parts of the north bay now. that means the main focus now but rain going to be heavy at times this morning and as we head throughout the morning hours. then it looks like we'll catch a break. but here's your cold front slamming the coastline right now. just moving onshore. if you are heading out the door be prepared it's going to be wet and wild around the bay area very windy this morning. computer models picking up on this pretty well now, just showers ahead of the system but

as the front slides on, that rain will intensify. those winds will be gusting strong. we'll see trees coming down, power outages around the bay area and that will open up the door to a series of storms heading to the bay area, maybe a brief break through the middle of the day and things tail off a bit but more storms are lining up in the pacific. we'll have more on that in a moment. if you want to check out the high-def doppler radar, go to cbssf.com/weather and see the rain in your neighborhood. let's check in with elissa harrington. >> reporter: the rain has been falling consistently here in san anselmo ever since we arrived just before 4:30 this morning. so get your umbrella put on a rain jacket because the storm has already arrived. i'm standing next to the san anselmo creek which runs through the middle of town. it floods when it gets to about 13 feet and at last check it

was just above 2 feet. but over the next few days of course that could change and people will be keeping a close eye on the creek. people who live in town are not taking chances. they spent yesterday loading up on sandbags to protect their homes and businesses. free sandbags are available to residents on sunny hill drive. the police department and the city's public works will have crews on hand 24/7 during the storm to respond to hazards like downed trees. they have cleaned debris and the roads. many businesses have installed floodgates. over the next few days we could see 6 to 10" of rain. >> we live in a low spot at the bottom of a hill so a lot of water comes down and so this is to go around the garage at the doors and basement. >> reporter: drive slowly because the first few days of a storm the roads can be hazardous because the rain brings the oil to the surface. now, at the richmond/san rafael

bridge, cate caugiran with more storm coverage. cate. >> reporter: elissa, today we could be expecting gale-force winds. if you look right now it's still a little calm but you can see that breeze is just about to kick in. >> and soon the morning commute along the richmond/san rafael bridge will stack up and with it comes mother nature's punch of rain and wind. the national weather service says winds will pick up to 45 miles per hour with gusts up to 65. chp says the combination of the wind and rain is dangerous especially with the amount of cars on the road. officers say it's best to drive like you are in fog or icy conditions meaning very slowly. trucks and other big vehicles could be of great concern especially here on our bridges. and it's easy to forget with these weather conditions the roads change. >> the inundation of rain is going to bring the oil to the surface creating a slicker roadway. >> reporter: now, along with potential traffic problems, high winds are also expected to

bring mass power outages and that's because of downed trees and branches. so pg&e crews were busy yesterday cutting down those trees and clearing excess debris. again, the commute here is pretty slow and as elissa mentioned the storm is here and actually hasn't reached us here at the richmond/san rafael bridge but we are ready and the whole purpose is to remind drivers to be ready, as well. you do want to go slow on these bridges especially with those high winds. that high wind warning is expect to last until 11:00 this morning. live on the richmond/san rafael bridge, cate caugiran, cbs 5. >> dry now but it is acomin'. >> yeah, elizabeth, that's good advice that cate was saying go slow. seems like it's a day for two hands on the wheel. >> yes. we'll check in with mass transit in just a minute. if you want to beat the rain, right now is a great time to go. we are not seeing too many incidents on the roads. it's dry. so here's a live look right now at the bay bridge toll plaza. it is not too bad. it's easy breezy trip right now

into san francisco. similar story across the san mateo bridge. i checked in with chp and we still don't have any chp issued wind advisories. that's different than the one issued by the national weather service. chp drives these bridges every morning and so far they say things are good in all directions. you can see right now westbound and eastbound 92. let's go to our maps and more live traffic cameras. here's the mass transit check. so far everything reporting no delay for bart, ace, muni, caltrain and ferries. and one more live look at the golden gate bridge, where we saw the lane change trucks drive by in our last traffic report so right now you are good to go from ma relationship county into san francisco. that is a check of traffic. back to you guys. >> thank you. the incoming storms will not help problems in daly city. that's where crews are working to shore up the hillside that collapsed two weeks ago because of a broken water main. they are using hay and mesh to keep more mud and debris from sliding down th hill. they have to restore the hillside before they repair the

pipe. a 4-month-old baby was inside a gilroy home during a drive-by shooting. police say gangs may be behind the violence too. someone fired at a home on glenview drive just after midnight. there were 8 people in the home during the shooting including that little baby. it's not clear if anyone was injured. teen accused in a deadly crime spree in san jose will be tried as an adult. the boy adonis muldrow will be in a courtroom this afternoon. the 15-year-old facing 8 felony counts including murder and attempted murder of a peace officer. police say he and 26-year-old jonathan wilbanks robbed a string of san jose businesses on november 16th killing this man, rory parkpettiford. an officer was also injured. two men are behind bars after a violent road rage incident that was all caught on video. oakland police say the ordeal began monday when a couple noticed a car driving erratically and started shooting video with their cell phone. police say the men in that car

realized they were being recorded and pulled out guns pointing them at the couple while at a stop light. a while later the men caught up with the couple again and one of them made his way inside the couple's car demanding the video. >> there husband was able to push the suspect out of the car and tells his wife hit the gas get out of here. >> police say that man fired at the couple's car. no one was hit. and with that video, officers were able to identify the suspects and take them into custody. there is a big boost coming to the new uc-berkeley's chancellor's paycheck. uc regents voted to add $50,000 to nicholas dirks' position a job that used to pay $436,000 a year putting his salary at $486,000. the 11% raise became part of a student protest last night. several students changed their necks to doors on the sixth floor of cal's eschelman hall.

the demonstration was to call attention to cal's low enrollment of students of color but the pay raise was also an issue. >> now you see there is no money. we have to raise your fees again by 24% over the next four years, which means 6% per year, but at the same time we have enough money to give a fee -- a raise of salary to the chancellor. >> the regents who voted for the raise say the extra money is coming from private donations, not from student fees. san francisco-based first republic bank is paying more than a million dollars in back pay after being accused of violating recordkeeping and federal overtime laws. it turns out hundreds of employees were misclassified so they didn't get overtime. others were shortchanged in their paychecks. workers in five states will be getting a portion of the money. 5:10 now. the hint of bipartisanship is starting to fade in washington when it comes to avoiding the "fiscal cliff." some republicans said they are willing to consider some tax

increases but they are insisting on larger budget cuts to benefit programs, which democrats oppose. if all sides can't agree on a spending plan before the year's end, automatic tax hikes and across-the-board budget cuts will all kick in. >> we must do everything we can during this short period of time to ensure that middle class families are not hit with $2,200 a year in tax increases. >> i hope cooler heads will prevail as we move through the process. we need to be working together. >> president obama is trying to generate public support for his idea. he will meet with corporate executives at the white house then travel to pennsylvania on friday to push for higher tax rates for the wealthy. after meeting with her harshest critics, senate republicans say they are even more troubled over u.n. ambassador susan rice's initial response to the deadly terror attack in benghazi. in a closed meeting yesterday, rice met with several senators including arizona republican john mccain. rice has been criticized for

so some good timing for those documentary filmmakers and the students. >> can you imagine witnessing that? pretty cool. all right. 5:15. lawrence and elizabeth are very busy this morning. >> they are about to get really busy because the rain is getting ever so closer. >> we have been checking out all our traffic cameras. look, we have rain now at the bay bridge toll plaza so the first of the storm is heading our way. you can see a baby splash now but the worst is yet to come. typically tends to flood in the middle lanes if you are heading towards the bay bridge so already starting to see slick conditions on some bay area bridges. so far no wind advisories. we know the winds are going to pick up, as well. so once again our business advice if you want to beat the later morning problems or the rain and the wind, head out now and again, you can see it's just starting to get a little wet on the pavement towards the incline section of the bay bridge. obviously no metering lights yet so no big delays. here's a live look across the golden gate bridge. these headlights are moving

southbound. another spot that usually tends to flood larkspur the area around lucky drive so just a heads up. we not usual problem spots. this is a live look at our sensors now on highway 4. it actually looks better than normal around this time of the morning so antioch free and clear no brake lights at all no changing color on our sensors towards concord. quick look towards the south bay in milpitas. here's a live look at 880/237 commute coming around that bend of 237 so far looks great and once again our live drive time sensors moving at the limit all across downtown san jose. that is a check of your "timesaver traffic." all right. let's go to lawrence and our hi- def doppler. >> everybody wants to check out the high-def doppler radar today and you should. this is pretty interesting as you can see, the rainfall just now making its way into parts of the north bay but the worst is really to come. this is going to be picking up through the morning commute. you can see a lot of yellows and oranges already beginning to move none parts of the north bay now. some of the rainfall will be heavy through the morning and settling down in the afternoon.

now, the rain moving into santa rosa so far lighter activity but yellows and oranges not far behind. the purple at the coastline are high wind warnings. er with expecting gusts up to 55 to 65 miles per hour or stronger over the mountaintops. i have been checking the buoys off the coastline. it doesn't support gusts yet but wouldn't be surprised if it gets wild and windy throughout the morning and then things taper off. this morning it is going to be very stormy early on. by the afternoon, turning more towards showers. maybe even a couple of sunny breaks. but the whole pattern has shifted to a very wet pattern. storm number one moving onshore, another one behind that and another one behind that. so today it's going to be very windy especially this morning and then storms start to roll true. through the day today this storm moves through in the middle of the morning and then by 11:00 you can see most of that sliding through the bay area but then into the afternoon that moves on by. we begin to dry things out just a couple of scattered showers and then it won't be until

thursday afternoon that that rain returns. you will notice this one moving slower and that will bring with it some heavy rainfall as we head through friday, as well. rain totals from the first one maybe near an inch of rain in the north bay valleys so a good soaker from the fast-moving storm system. temperatures in the 60s outside for today. next couple of days we are going to see some stormy weather on and off turning more towards showers tomorrow more heavy rainfall expected thursday night into friday and then a pretty good soaker possibility of some flooding into sunday. back to you. >> thank you. shocking allegations after a factory fire killed 112 workers in bangladesh. investigators say company officials may have locked the emergency doors trapping workers inside on saturday. 3 factory big-wigs are behind bars now. the factory produced clothing for several major american and european retailers. protests against egypt's new president are intensifying. a short time ago, state tv

announced the country's highest appeals court has defended the protests against the decrees. more than 200,000 people packed tahrir square yesterday. the protestors are upset about the edict that the president's decisions are above judicial review. 34 people were killed in syria where two-car bombs went off simultaneously. dozens more are reported injured. today's attacks happened in a city that's provided a refuge for pro-government syrians displaced in the civil war. 5. 19 now. tomorrow is the deadline for oakland police to come up with a reform plan to prevent a government takeover. the oakland police officers union has told a federal judge that department leadership is infective and failed to implement reforms that were ordered by the courts. the judge will have a hearing next month and then decide whether federal officials should take over their police department. quick thinking by a san jose school bus driver saved a disabled student's life after the bus burst into flames.

the bus caught fire yesterday near silvano dale middle school the driver unbuckled a child in a wheelchair and brought her to safety. >> she did everything perfect above and beyond and when i asked her what were you thinking? she said i wasn't. i was thinking about this precious child that had to get off the bus. >> just amazing there. luckily no one was hurt. but the bus was destroyed. firefighters were able to save the student's wheelchair. lucky she got out. >> apparently was instinct. the driver was coming out and it all worked out well. coming up, some sports at 5:21. the 49ers lose another player for the year. we'll tell how. >> big changes to the amgen tour of california. which bay area cities will get to see some of the world's top riders. >> and time for today's snow

we have live team coverage on the first big round of the rain. >> cate caugiran is at the richmond/san rafael bridge with more on all those whipping winds and elissa harrington is in san anselmo, where flooding is a big concern. but first, let's start with lawrence karnow in the weather center with where the rain will hit hardest. >> reporter: good morning. starting to see the showers showing up around the bay area but it's only going to be picking up from here. our high-def doppler radar already showing you plenty of yellows and oranges on the screen. and that's beginning to move into parts of the north bay. see for yourself, the showers moving in that direction. the heavier amounts of rainfall still toward bodega bay and making their way in toward santa rosa. expecting the strong gusty winds to come along with this cold front along the coastline and we're expecting to see gusts maybe 55 to 65 miles per hour. the rain beginning to move in along the peninsula as well but will be picking up throughout the morning, heavy at times. but with the first storm i think the main concern will be the winds. we could see some of those gusts again 55 to 65 miles per hour near the coastline, that

will likely bring down some trees, power lines and we are going to have some power outages this morning. the cold front moving onshore right now is going to push on through this morning, and then it looks like things are going to taper off. but this opens the door to a series of storms moving in, one right here, one behind it and one that's going to move in sunday. that's the one i'm concerned about the possibility of flooding towards sunday. here we'll time it out. as the cold front pushes through this morning, we get on the back side of it and clear out nicely around 11 a.m. you get out here and looking good into san francisco. then as we head toward the afternoon, just some widely scattered showers. so the bulk of the storm system coming through this morning with some very heavy rainfall. if you want to check out all that rain, you can go to our website, cbssf.com/weather. go to our high-def doppler radar where you can check out the rain right in your neighborhood. all right. let's go to elissa harrington. she is in san anselmo, where the rain has been picking up and i think in the next half hour it is really going to be dumping on you. >> reporter: oh, really? well, right now it has died off

a little bit but good to know it's just the calm before the storm as they say. i'm standing next here to the san anselmo creek, which floods when it gets to about 13 feet. right now, water levels are just above 2 feet. but when you add in the 8 to 10" we could see over the next few days it's going to get close and that's why residents aren't taking any chances. they have been floating up on sandbags to protect their homes and their businesses. and the city has also been preparing. they have cleaned out storm drains and cleared debris and branches from the trees. street sweepers have been clearing the roads and alerting residents to the possibility of flooding a warning people here take very seriously. >> we took care of the parking lot made sure everything was swept up all the leaves and that clog drains, and took down deck furniture and battened down. >> reporter: san anselmo is no stranger to flooding. this is video from 2005 when a strong storm hit the area

causing the creek to overflow and inundated the downtown with water. san anselmo has a flood horn to alarm residents if it gets critical. keep a flashlight and battery powered radio handy in case of power outages. drive slow and make sure your car has traction because the first few days of a storm are hazardous because the rain brings the oil to the surface and makes for slick conditions out there. now let's head over to cate caugiran who is at the richmond/san rafael bridge with more storm coverage. cate. >> reporter: elissa, the rain hasn't actually gotten to us yet but the wind is starting to pick up. i want to show you that tree over there with the flagpole. as you can see, the winds are gusting a little bit stronger than just earlier. today we are expecting winds to gust up to 65 miles an hour. and that's the concern for this morning commute. we are actually joined now live with chp officer kevin who is joining us. i know as we mentioned winds are a concern for the morning commute. what can we expect today for

drivers? >> we are expecting a high volume of accidents from just the traffic conditions, wet weather and wind. so we're back in 60 seconds. asking is that drivers slow down, leave extra space between vehicles and other vehicles around them. and for this bridge itself, we're worried about the higher winds. with that the high-profile vehicles, the semi trucks, suvs, pickup trucks with camper shells. those type of vehicles are obviously going to be affected more than just the regular cars. so we are asking that maybe those drivers of those vehicles find an alternate route. oo as the weather increases we -- as the weather increases, we anticipate more accidents due to the high wind on the span. so please drive slower. >> thank you. >> reporter: the winds are expected to pick up on the bridge so exercise caution driving. we know that the high wind warnings will last until 11:00 this morning. live on the richmond/san rafael bridge, cate caugiran, cbs 5. the winds starting to get a

little heavy out there. the rains starting to sneak in, too. >> no kidding. two hands on the steering while this morning, right, elizabeth? >> that's right. or mass transit. we continue to check in with bart and caltrain, muni. so far everything is moving along without a hitch. no big delays. so we're also watching all of our traffic cameras. we know the storm is acomin' of the we can see a few slick conditions already over at the bay bridge toll plaza. this is a live look at the san mateo bridge. it actually looks pretty nice so far both directions but as everybody says we know it will change here pretty shortly so right now, 14 minutes is that drive time coming out of hayward heading towards foster city. 880 let's take a live look at the nimitz in the east bay. usually when the winds pick up we can see it in this camera because the camera starts moving back and forth quite a bit. so far, so good towards oakland coliseum. southbound 880 moving fine past oakland airport all the way down into hayward towards 92. here's your drive time for your east bay popular route so far no major brake lights down the eastshore freeway, westbound 580 through livermore and the

nimitz or 24 coming through the caldecott tunnel. heading towards sfo looks good right now on 101 and once again here's that mass transit check no delay. that is "timesaver traffic." back to you guys. >> thank you. 5:37. new this morning they hit three cars three parked cars and a muni bus now san francisco police are searching for three people involved in a hit-and- run late last night. it happened on prague street and russia avenue around 11:00. the suspect car slammed into three vehicles and a 54 felton bus before th car rolled over. the drivers and passengers took off. gangs may be behind a drive- by shooting in gilroy. someone fired several shots into a home on glenview drive around midnight. the suspects fired at a car parked nearby. according to police there were eight people in the home during the shooting including a four- month-old baby.

no word if anybody was hit by gunfire. two men are in custody after a violent road rage incident that was all caught on camera in the east bay. oakland police say it began monday when a couple shot this cell phone video of another car driving erratically. police say the men in the car realized that they were being recorded and showed their guns to the couple while at a stop light. and then later the men caught up with the couple once again and one of them got inside the couple's car demanding that video. >> the husband is able to push the suspect out of the car and tells his wife, hit the gas, get out of here. >> police say that man fired at the couple's car although nobody was hit. officers arrested these two men the suspects a short time later with the help of the video. a fourth woman claims she was sexually abused by a science teacher at a school over 10 years ago. she filed a $10 million claim against the school district and three former administrators.

three other women have also filed claims or lawsuits. the teacher killed himself back in 1996. other bay area headlines, two law firms say they have signed up nearly 5,000 people for a lawsuit against the chevron oil company. it stems from the august fire at the refinery in richmond. the suit accuses chevron of being negligent when it comes to maintenance and of not properly alerting nearby residents of the fire. in san francisco, a fire tore through the roof of a home on capitol avenue. the fire broke out around 10:00 last night. firefighters got it under control. hopefully they can fix that roof before the rain arrives. 5:39 now. the new uc-berkeley chancellor is getting a hefty raise and a lot of folks not happy about it. nicholas dirks is getting the job that used to pay $436,000 a year. the regents voted now to add $50,000 to that. the new chancellor will get $486,000 a year now. the regents vote for the 11% raise came as students staged a

charged with reckless driving. >> that happens so often. >> it makes me wince when i see that video. >> especially with that little guy right there. we're 45 minutes away from the opening bell on wall street. futures trading suggests a lower open this morning. ashley morrison of cbsmoneywatch.com joins us now. good morning, ashley. >> reporter: good morning. well, lack of progress on "fiscal cliff" talks in the u.s. sent asian markets lower this morning. tokyo's nikkei loss more than 1% hitting a one week low while hong kong's hang seng fell about .5%. the deficit reduction talks weighed on wall street. the dow was down 89 yesterday while the nasdaq gave up 9. retailers have a strong start to the holiday shopping season. according to shopper track, foot traffic was up more than 8% for the four-day weekend starting on thanksgiving. sales rose nearly 3% to $22 billion compared to last year. and the surge in cyber monday shopping means big business for shippers. fedex says it expects to deliver 280 million packages

>> good stuff. >> it is. >> she has an amazing voice. >> ashley morrison of cbsmoneywatch.com thank you so much. >> the big man of the day. the grim reaper. >> you are busy. >> this looks impressive. we have been waiting for this big storm to make its way toward the bay area. it is finally coming onshore. high-def doppler radar showing you a lot of the yellows and the oranges showing up outside right now as we are seeing heavier bands beginning to make their way into the north bay. and also in other parts of the bay area. starting to see some of that moving in along the peninsula in toward the san francisco area. you see a pretty good band that's moving its way through the sunset district near bayview and it looks like we are going to see this rain intensifying throughout the morning. not only that, but some strong gusty winds to come along with that. high wind warnings have been posted along the coastline gusts possible to 55 to 65 miles per hour although i have been looking at some of the buoys off the coast nothing there yet. showers this afternoon and a wet pattern setting up maybe a foot of rain in some of the

wettest spots so yeah, we have some soaking weather to come as the first storm system makes its way onshore. the doors open though to a couple of more that are going to line up and move in through the next four to five days. so a series of storms likely to push through. after this one moves through this morning, the storms coming in a little bit different direction. you will notice the rainfall picking up outside now. then the main cold front sliding through. so the middle of the day we start to get on the back sighted behind that in the afternoon just maybe turning to some scattered showers. so a brief break then and then your next storm system drops in as we head in toward thursday evening a brief break with showers on saturday and then another strong storm moves in causing flooding on sunday. that's a look at weather. let's check the roads with
